This dossier seeks to channel a dialogue around new ways of understanding the broad and heterogeneous phenomenon of women in wars, starting from a primary consideration of the role that discourses play in the shaping of identities and memories. The articles collected here deal with "wars" in a loose sense, prioritising the conflictive and violent nature of specific events in the recent past which, for different reasons, are understood by the authors as warlike. This includes both the great battles of the Napoleonic imaginary, or classic wars between states, and the "new" and interstitial wars, which are characterised by the privatisation of war violence, as well as by their asymmetrical and diffuse development, guerrilla wars and armed conflicts marked by state terrorism.
